4 MPG

I'm finally back from Tucson. We stopped on the first night for 7 hours and drove straight through for the next two days. I'm pretty sure I haven't been up that long since I was 21. I'm still exhausted.

Driving the Uhaul truck was the worst. I'll never get a rental from them again. It was old, loud, and slooooow. We ended up spending $955 on gas (I still can't believe it!), which means that we got about 4 miles per gallon. Despite a near breakdown in Oklahoma and almost running out of oil, we made it back to Minnesota without major incident.

Here are some observations I made during the trip:

  1. New Mexico sucks. It's now my least favorite state and will be referred to as the "a$$hole of America" from now on. All of the towns along the freeway felt like fronts for meth labs and I feared for my life a couple of times. At a few exits the locals warned us not to risk parking the truck and even told us to avoid driving down the streets.
  2. Dear Oklahoma, could your roads get any worse?
  3. Magazines and other reading materials are not to be found south of the Mason Dixon line. Okay, I lied. There were a shitload of wrestling and racing magazines.
  4. I need to learn how to change a tire. It's embarrassing when two girls ask for help and you have to turn them away.

Well, there you have it. The trip was basically a good experience, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to return to normal life. Now that my brother is home, there shouldn't be anymore surprise trips in the near future.

Pardon my language here.. but HOLY SHIT ... 4 miles per gallon?.. That\'s about as bad as an Indy car og F1 car.. A Ferrari street car does about 4 km per liter... And that\'s consideres really bad!. (1 gallon = 3.8 liters by the way, and 1 mile = 1.6 km).

No no no no - there will be no teaching Craig how to change a tire. Girls know that getting boys to change tires for them is a sneaky way of getting a phone number... and we girlfriends want none of that now. Besides, changing tires and building fires (rhyme unintended) are the only things that keep him in awe of me. For the sake of ignorant bliss, we should keep him in the dark on the relative ease of those things as long as possible.

As of the summer of 2004, the "C.O.P.S." TV show was banned from the City of Albuquerque, after a C.O.P.S. spokesman said (as quoted in the Albuquerque Tribune) "We love New Mexico, because we get more footage here in one month than we normally get in three months, in a bigger city". The mayor realized that his city's long-running campaign of false advertising to lure naive tourists in to New Mexico was being torpedoed by a TV show that showed the whole country the true cornerstones of New Mexican culture: violent crime, foul-mannered jailbirds, and a climate of total disrespect for others. Albuquerque, in 2005, has a violent crime rate 15 TIMES HIGHER than New York City (source: FBI statistics), so your perception that your life was in danger was no joke, friend, it probably was. Don't waste your time or your money there, unless you like being verbally abused and ripped off by grandiose, arrogant homeboys who think they\'re better than everyone else!
