Donkey Punch
Last night I went to see my friend's band, Chooglin', at the Triple Rock. The band was great and the people watching was excellent.
Before the show I noticed a couple standing around listening to the bar music and rocking out to AC/DC like that was the evening's entertainment.
When the live music started, all hell broke loose. The couple hit the dance floor with a vengeance. Mind you, nobody else was dancing, but they were going for it like their drunkenness depended on it. It was kind of funny at first, but they started crashing into people pretty hard and acting like jackasses.
After about 10 minutes, a girl who looked like she just came back from a Suicide Girls convention finally had enough. She told the couple to settle down and the guy immediately got up in her face. Someone got between them because the guy went ballistic, telling her to shut the eph up, etc. Then, it happened. Our heroine reached around the man in the middle and punched the jackass in the face. He tried to stay and act tough for a little while, but finally just left without incident.
I think that's the first time while not watching COPS that I've seen a girl punch someone in the face. I loved it.
Today's Bad Idea
I decided to make a smoothie this afternoon with my new blender and followed my usual recipe: OJ, yogurt, and frozen fruit. After it was ready I had the bright idea to add a vitamin boost. I grabbed a bottle of B-100 capsules, broke a couple of them open, and added the powder to the mix. Not good.
I tried diluting the smoothie with more OJ and yogurt, but nothing got rid of the bitter vitamin taste. I tried forcing a few gulps down, but just couldn't do it. My friend, Bill, reminded me that they sell tasteless vitamin powder, which will be a must the next time.
Okay, that was today's bad idea. Hopefully it will save someone from having the same experience. I really should have known better.
Rolleicord IV Manual Posted
A couple of months ago, David from Australia sent a Rolleicord IV manual to add to my collection. I finally got around to scanning and posting it this afternoon. You can find it (and a few others) on the manuals page if you want to check it out.
I'm always looking for more old camera manuals to post, so if you have any that aren't already here, let me know.
Twenty Seven Inches
Whew! I finally made it back from New York. I went last Wednesday and had planned on coming home Sunday, but the city got buried in 27" of snow and all travel out of New York was cancelled. It ended up being pretty cool to have an extra day there and we made the most of it.
I'll report all of the details later this week and will have lots of photos to post, though 95% of them are on film, which I still have to get developed.
Happy Valentine's Day!
New York Trip - The Details
As promised, here's a quick rundown of everything I did while in New York last week. Thanks to my mom, I got to stay in the Michelangelo Hotel, which was really nice and located in a near perfect location for most things that I wanted to do.
Wednesday, February 8th, 2006
- Ray's Pizzareia - Times Square - Very average New York slices.
- Sam Yahel Trio at Small's - A great set in a room that felt like grandma's basement. Plus, it was just $20 cover and that came with 2 free drinks!

- Central Park - Even though it was freezing outside, I made a point to walk up the west side of the park. I had to jump in a cab after about an hour because my ears were freezing, but it was a really nice walk on a sunny morning.
- B&H Photo - Unlike any other shopping experience I've had. If you want to feel like cattle, shop here. Don't get me wrong, the store blew my mind. It's a slick operation with all of the gear you could ever want, it's just a little impersonable...to say the least.
- Museum of Modern Art - Saw a great photo exhibit, checked out the sculpture garden and saw Van Gogh's original Starry Night.
- International Center of Photography - Checked out the Body at Risk exhibit and picked up a Holga 120N in the store. Oh, Peter Dinklage (from The Station Agent) was there. We made eye contact and I gave him a slight nod of recognition. I wish I would have gone up and said hello.
- Chanpen Thai - I guess it's fitting that this place is located in the Hell's Kitchen section of New York. The food sucked. The green curry smelled like wet dog hair and the complimentary Thai salad (lettuce with peanut sauce) was an insult.
- Finesse Mitchell at Carolines Comedy Nightclub - B minus comedy from one of Saturday Night Live's newest cast members.
Friday, February 10th, 2006
- Walked down 6th Avenue from 51st Street to Canal Street (about 3 miles)
- Famous Joe's Pizza - Everything that's good about a New York slice.
- db Bistro Moderne - Great French food and amazing service. I give it an A minus.
- Wicked - Fourth row at the Gershwin Theatre. A+!
Saturday, February 11th, 2006
- Ground Zero - I thought that this was going to be more emotional, but it did nothing for me.
- Washington Square Park - Cold. Empty. Smelly restrooms. Loved it.
- Downtown Music Gallery - One of my favorite cd stores, specializing in avant-jazz.
- Katz's Deli - A great experience and excellent food. Our waiter let me take his photo by the meat counter.
- Museum of Natural History - Fun, but it was way too hot inside. Everyone was complaining and we had to leave after a little more than an hour.
- Sushi Yasuda - Without question, this was the best meal of my life. This place has been reviewed as the best Japanese restaurant in America and possibly even Japan.
- Blue Note - Saw my mom's favorite group, Fourplay.
Sunday, February 12th, 2006
- Sweeney Todd - Fifth row at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Very dark and morbid. Loved it.
- John's Pizza - If you can only go to one pizza place, go here.
- Murray's Cheese - Had to get some cheesecake.
- Nick Dipaolo and Laurie Kilmartin at Carolines.
There you have it. All in all it was a great trip and being stuck for an extra day in a blizzard didn't slow us down at all. I can't wait to go back this spring when it's warm and easier to walk around with a camera.
One Scarf to Rule Them All
I can't be the only one to have noticed that everyone is wearing this scarf or one just like it. Start paying attention when you're out. I dare you. You will become obsessed.

It's official! Inside the Actor's Studio is coming to iTunes. The Dave Chappelle episode will be the first one that I buy. I caught the first half of it when it aired and it's been sitting on my DVR ever since. I just can't sit down in front of my tv long enough to watch anything these days. Portable tv by way of a video iPod might be the way of my future.
