Stranger in a Strangeland

My friend Brian is coming to visit in about a month. This is huge! We've never met in person and he's coming all the way from Denmark to stay with me for about 4 days. We've been emailing and chatting for a couple of years now, so I feel like I know him somewhat well and think we'll get along just fine.

We're planning to hit some of my favorite local areas to take photos (Uptown, the Warehouse District, and the Walker) and will probably drive to Chicago to check out Millennium Park.

What else do I need to do with him while he's here?

Caution?

I noticed this "caution" on my iPod adapter this morning. I'm not sure that I get it. Seriously, why is this a caution?

Out with the old

I made some changes here last night. First, I got rid of the tutorials link in the navigation. The page is still available and linked from my archive page, but for now, it's dead to me. Second, I added a page and navigation link for manuals. Manuals? Yes, manuals. Let me explain.

I've been buying old cameras over the past month off of eBay. Specifically, I picked up a few Yashica T3's and a Yashica T3 Super. I did a little bit of searching and had a hard time finding a manual for the camera. In my searching, I noticed that a bunch of people sell scanned or photocopied camera manuals. Lame.

I had grand fantasies of creating a site to host free manuals for every discontinued camera, but abandoned that idea quickly after one manual took a few hours to scan.

Instead, I created a new section: neongreen.com/manuals. Currently, there's just one manual (the Yashica T3 Super manual ), but that will change in the near future. I believe that I have a Yashica T4 manual on the way and am also putting out the call for old manuals (cameras, video cameras, drum machines, synthesizers, etc.).

Please contact me if you have high quality scans or a physical copy of a manual that you're willing to contribute. For physical copies, I'll reimburse the postage cost and send the original manual back to you.

The Snowsuit Effort

The Snowsuit Effort is one of the best and most inspiring photo sites I've seen.

Photoshop Tip Request

I'm currently scanning and cleaning up photos from my mom's yearbook. They're all b&w and some of them are written on with blue ink (LOTS of blue ink). I'm currently using Photoshop's clone tool to tediously remove the writing. Is there a better way? I really want to speed up the process. It's taking f...o...r...e...v...e...r.

Opt out or pre-screened credit offers

Hate getting those pre-approved credit offers in the mail?

Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT. It's an automated service run by the four major credit bureaus.

iTunes 4.9

iTunes 4.9 is out! The killer feature is that it now supports podcasts. I'm surprised by how much I like what they've done. My favorite podcasts were easy to find and the interface for browsing by category works far better than it ever did for audiobooks (Who wants to browse audiobooks by looking at a list of hundreds of authors?).

The subscription and management screen is really slick. I expected to be able to download podcasts in the same way that you buy a song, but didn't anticipate that they would embrace podcasting as much as they have. Apple seems to know what users want. I guess that's nothing new.

Is it time to drop iPodderX?

Goodbye, iPod Photo.

Wow, no more iPod photo! Why? Because now they all have color screens and are capable of displaying photos...cool! I wish they had a 30GB or 40GB model priced between the current models, but either of them will suit me just fine. I'm glad they were announced a month before my birthday (hint, hint).
