I can no longer email my dad with anything other than my Yahoo account. His ISP, CP Internet, is using a spam "solution" from dsbl.org, which lists my ISP's mail server as being a spammer. I wrote them a complaint explaining my frustration:

Thank you for the response.

I do understand why you use the tools that you do to block spam. Spam is obviously a problem that needs a solution. However, I feel that you should reconsider your solution.

The problem with most spam blocking tools today is that they can prevent your paying customers from getting the very messages that they are paying you to deliver. I'll admit that spam filtering solutions are not perfect. That is precisely the reason why they should not be used.

It is mind-numbing that you are aware of the fact that users of a major ISP (Roadrunner) are prevented from sending email to your customers and continue to stand behind this solution.

Thank you for your time,

Craig

...and there you have my opinion on spam filtering at the server level.

This week's free items are pretty good. Well, maybe not that good, but it includes a free lunch. Check it out.

Monday, March 3rd, 2003

I got the Lomo today and went home on lunch to play with it. It seems pretty cool, but I don't like the fact that I have to wait to see the results until I get the film developed.

Wednesday, March 5th, 2003

I'm bringing my first roll of film from the Lomo in today and will post the photos tonight (if any of them turn out okay). I called ahead for pricing info and am blown away by how much developing costs. To get prints and a cd is going to run about $25. Of course, if I had the patience to wait, the price would be much less. I've had a digital camera for about 2 years and forgot all about the price of developing.

I don't normally like to link to news stories, but this one is too good:

I got the Lomo photos developed and returned tonight. I've since discovered that Target's one-hour processing with a cd-rom is only nine dollars.

Anyway, here are four of the shots that turned out .

I've buckled to the demands of sash-girl and am going to implement commenting on this site very soon. I don't use a third party product, so it's something that I am developing myself. Last night I finished creating what is needed to display and add comments. Today I have been clownin' around with displaying the number of comments per post in an efficient manner. I found a great tutorial at vzio.com that helped me out a lot.

In unrelated news, I drove around a little at lunch trying to use up the film in my Lomo. I hope to get it developed tonight and have more pics to post.

Weekend update:
The film that I brought to Target turned out like crap. I guess you get what you pay for. I got my money back and took the negatives to ProEx. I'll get them tomorrow and hopefully have something good to post.

I spent a fair amount of time working on a commenting system for this site. I've got most of the details ironed out, but want to tweak it for a few more days before turning it loose.

Monday, March 10th, 2003

I almost forgot to mention that there's a new free item this week.

Monday, March 10th, 2003

I got my Lomo shots back from ProEx and they look like crap. I don't blame them, the negatives are probably ruined and/or dirty from running through all the different one-hour photo machines this weekend. I'm going to finish off the roll that's in my camera and see how they do with film that's still in the canister. No new photos today.

Monday, March 10th, 2003

ProEx did a nice job with my negatives. At only $8 for all of my pics on cd, I can't complain at all. I now have about 10 photos posted.

Wednesday, March 12th, 2003

I'm more or less done with the commenting system. All that I have left is to put some filters in place to strip unwanted javascript and html out of posts. I'll be working on that tomorrow and hope to have something ready to go live on Friday.

Happy anniversary to me

Whoops...I missed my own anniversary. Tonight marks one year and one week of neongreen.com!

Late for Linux

You know you're a geek when...
...you're late for work because that Linux install just couldn't wait.

I got distracted with downloading Redhat 8 and playing Tony Hawk 4 last night, so there is a slight delay in getting the comment system working. Hopefully I'll have it ready this weekend.

PHP forms down

If anyone has been trying to use the forms on the free stuff or contact page without success, try again. Turns out that my hosting company is having a problem. I've temporarily moved the form processing from PHP to ASP and it appears to be working.

Glasshaus breaks

Sadly, a bright star in web development book publishing has faded. Glasshaus exists no more. I suggest you buy what you can and download source code from their site while you can.

ex-friends of Ed

Turns out that friends of ED is also going to cease to exist. I haven't seen official word on big brother WROX yet, but will post if I do.

wrox talk

Kevin Yank over at SitePoint.com dishes the real scoop on Wrox, Glasshaus and friends of ED. It appears that all three are being liquidated. I hope that another publishing house picks them up. It would be terrible to see all three go.

site update

I haven't felt much like posting or working on my site this week. I promise that I'll have commenting up in the near future. In the meantime I've been fiddling around with creating an RSS feed and using this tutorial by 4guysfromrolla to help me.
